Hopefully, I'll be starting the pond back up by the end of the week [down since spring for a very slow-going renovation]. All of my plants have been in tubs or kiddie pools and no new plants have been purchased since.

Before I start adding them back to the pond, should I treat them first? They already have some established bio-bugs that would be helpful with the pond. But is that enough of a benefit vs killing off any BAD bugs [and those nasty little pond snails!]?

  • Also, some places I've read, they talk about adding PP in PPM [parts per million]. How the heck do I figure that out? Surely there is a formula for teaspoons per a set amt. of water......
  • I've read to soak plants for hours at a time, and I've read to do a 30 second dip -- big difference there, so which is it?
  • afterward, do you rinse them in plain water? and for how long?
  • I also read something about doing a hydrogen peroxide dip as a final stage...
  • how do you DISPOSE of the PP solution when you're through with it?

never used it all I do is knock all the dirt of the roots and mix up water and peroxide bath and keep dipping them until the whole plant looks clean and dirt free .I then inspect the plant and dirty water just goes on the lawn .I them fill up my tub with more water and peroxide and pour in some miracle grow and soak .If there is anything there it will die and then that gets poured on the lawn .I have even used epsom salts because it helps the fertilizer get absorbed faster

I have plants from countryscapes ready to put in my pond next week and was wondering if I should put some of the algae from the container into the new pond to help it cycle. They are lilies that are doing very well. She also gave me a couple bog plants that are growing crazy out the top of a 5 gal bucket!!! I noticed some little snails but I know my goldfish will eat them in a heart beat, he loves them. Anyway the lilies are not in pots and not sure if I will pot them at all. Do I have to clean them up or can I just put them in? I want to put some rosy reds in the lily container for a week then in the pond together to cycle it.

I use a product called permoxyn by Kordon. It's a diluted form of potassium permanganate to disinfect live plants. I mix up a bucket of water with the solution and let the plants soak for up to fifteen minutes. I rinse live plants with clear water first and then soak in the pp solution and then give them a good rinse with clear water again. Then into any tanks or pond they go.

Have not had any trouble with infestations in my tanks or pond and have not killed any plants doing this. Just to clarify this has only be done on aquatic plants. And honestly I have not been as diligent cleaning plants for my pond as I am with the aquarium plants :shame:
