Possibly getting goldfish tonight...can I do this?

Most any animal that is put into a new environment will to some degree raise its defense mechanisms. Usually they will hide. Fish, especially Goldfish, seem to have the ability to find hiding places.Your 2 shubunkins are likely hiding. They will come out on their own when they feel it is safe. Have a little patience.

If these are the 1st fish going into your pond, there is no need to quarantine them, but it is something to consider if you add any future fish.

Chances are they are just hiding -- give them time.

About heaters -- these are only necessary if your water will freeze. The heater is intended to keep an opening in the ice so that air and toxic gases can be exchanged. It isn't intended to heat the water.
