Mine has a handle and a cage just the pre filter was not so good.

I have my pump in a skimmer. Before anything gets to the pump it has to go through a mesh bag and then a series of brushes that hang down in front of the pump. I have never had anything get through the mesh bag but it doesn't clog in the fall when the leaves start to fall. Otherwise it is clear all summer.
