As far as Spring cleaning is concerned, I drain my ponds every Spring remove and fertilize the water lilies and scoop out all the muck from the bottom and give it a good cleaning. Having said that I remove my fish every fall and place them back in the Spring.

If i overwintered them outside that would be a different situation. I don't think i would drain anything, just scoop up the muck from the bottom and let it go at that.

Not sure how cold it gets out your way, but it will have a major impact on how deep you will need to make your pond. The reverse is also true, if you have really hot summers a deeper pond will tend to stay cooler and more comfortable for your fish.

Yet another consideration is if you will be keeping Koi, Goldfish or both. With Goldfish you can get away with a much smaller pond, if your thinking Koi, you will need to go bigger.

You doing the right thing and do you research first, better then rebuilding in a year or two.

Good luck

Very good Steve, it seems you keep your ponds in excellent shape. I want to do the same so will need to decide if a pond is practical for us. Speaking with the Aquascape contractor, as recommended by some here, I have useful information to help with my decision.

I winter my fish indoors as well...do you use tubs? or have an actual indoor pond like I do?
