I was out for the last couple days or so pulling my vines of Creeping Primrose out and clipping it and moving water lilies in new pots etc. and I disturbed the water in the pond w/ a net and the garden hose cleaning off the shelves. Now I have all this floating green gunk. If you scoop it with a fine net it comes out and like I said it's just on the surface laying next to plant stems and if you mess w/ it it will float away and then settle in one spot again and just sit there and look nasty. Is it some kind of green DOC or just scum that needs to be removed w/ the batting stuff? Lots of it is so fine it just goes right through the fine net.

It's mostly algae, j.w., some dead and some struggling to make a come-back, just like a washed-up hockey team at this time of year! Your fines filter should remove most of it if netting won't do it.

If you buy fine fabric and sew it so it fits over your net you can scoop it out .I did 6 nets like that out of bridal vale stuff for my neighbors ponds and mine .One yard of it only cost a 1.35 or so and it works really great .You can buy expensive nets at pet store that will get it out .Even fine screen material for your window screens work .

micro fiber kitchen towels also absorb a lot of the algae .I bought some of the kitchen ones at the dollar store to help clean the squeegee off after I clean my windows out side and I had one laying on the deck rail unused yet and it blew off and landed in the pond filter with the lid off and to lazy to walk down the steps to get it ,so since it seemed to not being doing any harm figured just leave it until I was done .I went down to get it and happened to notice all the fine stuff it had picked up .I took it out and twisted a bit in a bucket nearby to get water out and then rinsed and was really amazed at all the stuff that was in that kitchen micro fiber towel .I wondered if I streached it out in the filter how much it would really pick up .I used 2 of them and waited 2 hours and there was lots of stuff stuck in the fibers and it did not clog up .I have to go to walmart because the quilt batting I have been using finally fell apart ,so birds get it for nesting junk .I was impressed and how easy the micro fiber was easy to wring out and rinse off and how much it really picked up .I wonder also if 2 sewn together would make a good sock to put over the net to pick up the fine stuff in the pond .Would be easy to slide off and wring and rinse off and put back on .Just sew ties to it to tie to the net handle .testing it but have to get more that are unused at the dollar store again ,2 for 1 dollar here
