I'll repeat - with a waterfall running, there's literally no need to worry about a hole in the ice. My pond is currently 100% covered by an ice cap, but I'm not concerned because I know the water is moving and has plenty of opportunity to off-gas as it flows.

you don't say how deep or how many gallons pond holds . You can supper cool the water having that waterfall going and that may harm fish . . I use foam pipe insulation on my hoses . It helps from them getting brittle

supercool being used here is incorrect, Sissy; the impurities alone in pond water would prevent the definition of supercool from happening;

"Supercooling,[1] also known as undercooling,[2] is the process of lowering the temperature of a liquid or a gas below its freezing point without it becoming a solid.

Water normally freezes at 273.15 K (0 °C or 32 °F), but it can be "supercooled" at standard pressure down to its crystal homogeneous nucleation at almost 224.8 K (−48.3 °C/−55 °F).[5][6] The process of supercooling requires that water be pure and free of nucleation sites, which can be achieved by processes like reverse osmosis or chemical demineralization, but the cooling itself does not require any specialised technique."

Wiki reference

What I think you're trying to say is cool the water down faster/more than normal, which might hurt the fish but probably won't as everything is cooling at the same pace if exposed and circulating. A sudden temp drop would hurt them though.

100%. It's been fun to see the new ice formations that we get with the reconfigured waterfall. And the lights just make everything more fun!

(Although not having fun out there this week - suddenly it's FRIGID!)

@Lisak1 PIC PIC PIC ........... @brokensword Why so serious............. batman .........

@sissy Point is Spot on correct ..... is the term a 10000% maybe not but geeez YES and @addy1 PUSHES THIS ALL THE TIME ... using your air pump to keep a hole open can SUPER chill your water meaning that the temp can be lowered in the pond. By adding air from outside the pond that's SAY at 10 degrees, can lower the water temp. Or a water fall can do the same by spreading the water out over the falls exposing it to the colder air but as the water is moving IT will not freeze until it slows down . Will it change the properties of super chilling no come now. did sissy get the point out as you may try to keep the pond healthy in sub zero temps ZERO being below 32 degrees can lower the pond temp enough to kill their fish. YES
Now i do use a air pump and not a heater breather. YES . why ? glad you asked IT kills two birds with one stone
1. keeps an opening in the water keeping the build up of co2 to a minimum.
2. It oxygenates the water. and before you start with it doesn't add oxygen to water by bubbling air to a pond I say horse cacky it's just not the most efficient. It does move the water as it bubbles so it does the job. But I also do not draw from the open AIR outside. My pump is in my bulked where it's never that cold but it's not 68 degrees from inside either.

I should add though that with t he water fall as the water splashes as all falls do THE water that lands outside on the rocks will freez and will make those tunnels where it's now an igloo the absolute best insulator there is ,the temps will stay at 32 degree or more it can be in the negatives outside a igloo but it's nice a cozy under the ice . much like our fish under the ice.

I only say that because a friend loss EVERY fish one winter. Using a too strong air pump, in the shallow part of the pond to keep a hole open. When the deep end started melting, nothing but dead fish. He had to do a total restock. They were tough goldfish not fussy koi.

My koi were bought in 2005 and still alive so I must be doing something right . I have only lost one fish and it is because I was doing work on the pond and that night he jumped out of the pond . Now I use electrical conduit and sew pockets in window screening and put them across my pond . But with that my pond is a rectangle and not a natural pond , I was my concerned about the fish than the look of the pond .Funny I say that since my house is country look and tucked into rural VA . Maybe modern country lol we got down to 18 degrees yesterday morning but my sister and i braved the cold for bargains at the flea market and this morning it was 36 degrees . I see up by JW 's they got record rainfall and lots of flooding hope JW is OK
