hey thanks newday3000. when i built the wall i intended to use a laser level, but didn't and it ended up with one end 3 inches higher than the other. I just couldn't stand it so on one side I built a form and poured concrete that tapered down and on the other side I cut 18 of the landscaping rocks with a cement saw. It was a lot of work but it's much more appealing all level isn't it.

From the pic's it looks perfect. It does make a difference how it looks overall when the water is so close to the top lip. Should look great landscaped.

i've got one of the aqua art retro BD's in my pond, and I can assure you that you'll be pleased with it. It's made a huge difference in my pond. I don't put any materials under mine...interesting idea though.

Koiguy, you are tempting fate! Go higher! Go bigger! LOL!

you guys crack me up. you'll laugh, but the original plan was to go up one more course. that would have made the wall 24 in from the ground and i would have avoided a lot of digging. but when we stacked that extra course on, everyone agreed it didn't look good. funny how much difference in appearance 6 inches made. and i just loved moving 40 65# landscaping stones again. if it had even looked ok, i'd have left them.

and as for the extra liner, heck i thought i measured it right, but i do have extra. at the widest point probably 2 ft and on the length it seems like maybe 6 ft. probably could have gotten by with a 25 X 30. I have some double sided tape so I can probably use the trimmings for the waterfall.

I totally agree about the Aquaart retro bottom drain. I've had one all along. When I first put in in I wanted to see how effective it was. So I donned my mask and went under with some paper towels. It has a pretty good suction out to about 18 inches, more or less. I put the matting in because I was a little concerned about all that stuff going straight into the pump. Let me tell you, it has to be cleaned almost weekly and is it ever gunked up. I just use some common household nylon string wrapped around the "feet" to hold the matt in. And I attach the piping to the skimmer with a Fernco fitting so all I have to do is loosen one side, lift the BD out and clean the matting.

LOL! Stroppy, I was just thinking the same thing. He did promise us a photo of him dipped in that icy water! This does remind me of a Seinfeld episode.....

Temps have dipped in the valley. low 20s and teens tonight. running a propane heater in the garage 24/7 and that's just keeping it at about 45, water temp 50. not feeding now.

pond temp when first filled 42 F. yikes.so glad for my neighbors waders. now there's an 1 inch of ice, but when it warms i've got to go back in and sort out a few folds. hopefully then I can set up a pic.

got a couple of problems in need of ideas. #1, the humidity in the garage is warping the garage door panels. from 5 ft down they are actually wet. may be too late = have to replace them. ugh. otherwise only things I can think of are a) a dehumidifier which would probably have to be huge to work or ;) if the doors ever dry then painting them with something. anybody ever had this problem? how about the basement ponds--any humidity problems. any ideas?

#2 for capstones I'm thinking of using the same landscaping rocks, only cut in 1/2. I've already cut 23 for making up the 3 inches on the front wall. it's a pain, but it goes fairly quickly and i can't find anything that would look better.

the wall by the fence will be under a deck and walkway so I'm thinking of using the bottom pieces. I'd only have to cut about 20 more instead of 40. But, I think I need something to fill the holes with. Or do I? Seems like they'd collect dirt and other crud and then when it rained it'd go in the pond.

The bottom 1/2 of the stones is the first two pics. In the last two fotos you can see what the top 1/2 of the cut stone looks like.

:regular_waving_emot the motivation driving me like a madman was fear of a cave in. those sides had 3 layers of heavy stones stacked on them. without them i wouldn't have worried so much. now that the water's in there and the fish are happy in the garage, i'm all set. seriously. not worried at all and really feel a sense of relief.

I'm thinking of hiring some professional help with the waterfall. at least for ideas. there's a guy up here who's been in the biz for quite awhile and i'm going to see what he charges. i have plenty of ideas, but little experience. and i've gone to so much trouble so far i'd really like for the WF to look superb.

I think it's smart to consult with someone when it comes to a waterfall. For one, if not built properly it can be a hotspot for leaks and water loss. It usually the most pesky part of pond building.
