Hi Deb, it's very typical for a new pond to "turn" green before it has fully cycled. Once a pond is properly cycled the algae goes away because its main source of nutrition is now being consumed by "bb" beneficial bacteria. Sometimes it can take almost a whole season to properly cycle so the first year for some pond owners can be a little dissapointing if they want to show it off. I never add chemicals of any kind to my pond and just have a small uv light on my bio-filter and my water is always clear. I hope this helps.
