I wouldn't bother doing any testing I would just chalk the deaths up to winter stress and old age. The theory about the oxygen level being low could also be the cause. Do a water partial change to make the water cleaner and keep an eye on things. If more die I would be concerned and do a full water change. Old water isn't necessarily good water.
