If you have alot of rocks sharp or otherwise in your soil along with roots and even possibly old construction debris and glass" ask me how i know" the standard geotextile you can get from hd or lowes is 5 oz at best. I recommend at least 8 oz it is much tougher. if you have sand or clay with few rocks i would still go with the 8 as it is an insurance policy to keep the liner safe

I got mine from Menards and it was 5.6 oz. For the amount I got at the time, and at a comparable price to a single piece, I was able to install multiple layers over my very rocky soil, especially on the bottom; with enough left to put under the large rocks in the pond around the edge. One drawback was the narrower width, the strips would move around at times while I was trying to get everything installed.
