FWIW the only time a smaller pipe is better is when is being used as a siphon. In a siphon you want the water to move fast enough to carry air bubbles along with the water and out the other end.

In all other cases larger pipes mean lower losses to friction. More water pumped per $ with the same pump.

Thanks HTH, but I really dont understand his intents with the design one bit. If a smaller pipe would have pulled more, I dont think I would have wanted to see it. I've never seen so much crap come out of a filter and this was only running for 5 days. Ive seen some nasty ponds clear in a few days, and what came out of the filters werent pretty, but this was gross.

I know he wanted a larger pipe due to plant roots, but dont know if he went 3" intentionally, or because it's what he had on hand. I am still having trouble grasping all the filter options, and what is most effective for what. Ive read all the DIY threads to gain better understanding, so when he tries to explain, I can grasp it better. For this parrticular pond, its only 600 gallons, and in the basement for plants. Since it is a body of water, I took the oppurtunity to grow out some babies in there too .. these fish get nothing but spare parts for their filter, etc. Water tests are all good, and they are growing well, so the over all water quality cant be that bad, and it didnt LOOK bad ...

The point of this "thing" is so so much crap doesnt end up in the skippy filter he is building for the babies...
