Black racer , very common here . Had one that lived under a wood deck for years. Got to wher as long as you kept a respectal distance it payed you no mind.

Yea, that's not a pond threat except for your frogs. But be aware, it's not unusual for them to get in the water, this is common for them as they use the water to cool themselves nad to soften the outer skin prior to shedding. They can be an intimidating species but really are more bluff than anything.

I love my black racers. They are beautiful and like to eat things I'd prefer not to have around. Unfortunately, they don't know about property lines and the neighbors kill them.

Yea I have no problem with them, glad to see the one in my yard on patrol when I do, but some feel the only good snake is a dead snake .

We never see any snakes around here.........maybe the cats scare them away. All we have here anyway are Garter Snakes, no poison ones at all this side of the mountains........yippee! They can come here anytime they like..........the garter snakes I mean not the poison ones :)

The last couple of nights we have had several visitors. I love going out at night as this is when the most intresting things show up. I have a musk turtle that has shown up but so far no luck on getting pics of it yet. I'll start with some of the different frogs.

Saved my favorites from last night for last. I've seen this little guy a few times the last few weeks and last night it just posed away for the camera, must have stayed around for about 20 minutes or so. Young ribbon garters snake.

Yups rodent eating snakes, water snakes have to be one of the most useful predators around a pond, taking out Bullfrogs and verminous rodents that carry ticks fleas and bubonic plague etc, lol

Those pesky rodents have the rather annoying habit of biting holes in pond liners under freezing ground, in the winter months

moles do that here and I have to keep those mole ultra sound things in the ground near my pond .I see there mounds everywhere but not around my pond .I was not sure about them until I bought 1 and put it 12 feet from my pond and did not see the mounds anymore around there ,so I bought another and put it in my front yard about 25 feet from my pond where I saw lots of mounds and now gone .I have to buy another one for the side yard by my fruit trees

Why would you want them to take out bullfrogs? I know they can eat small fish but other than that I haven't encountered to many issues with the bullfrogs. We have a large grey ratsnake that lives either in my yard or my neighbors shed most of the time. had a big speckled king snake for a few years but haven't seen it in about two years now. Water snakes I don't mind as young but as they get big they get a nasty disposition and I like to remove them before they get over 4 foot long.
