So coming in from the top... is it just a pipe loosely fit inside a larger pipe? I hadn't considered the muck factor. In the reef keeping world, check valves are a serious no-no. They WILL fail due to calcium buildup (calcium is typically 450ppm, with 12dKH, salinity 1.026). Is it the same here? Are they just a device waiting to fail you?
calcium deposits are not a real problem in fresh water ponds, i could see it being a problem in salt water tanks. push the joints together snug ,but dont glue them. if not just for the reason, if you want to clean the filter or change the plumbing inside for any reason. even SKIPPY suggests this.plus i put vaseline on my upper connections to make them easier to disassemble. found that tip on another site.
