I went 4 feet and believe me it was no easy task doing it by myself so know what you mean .But i wanted to make sure the 2 koi I have that are over 2 feet long had room to roam .Plus my summers here can be hot and the deeper the water the cooler it will be .Right now I have 16 fish .But found 8 more babies and that was after I thought I gave all of them away .Sneaky devils .

I wasn't thinking about the summer heat and keeping water cool. My water lilies exploded this season and covered almost 2/3 of pond surface. Plus my neighbors trees provide some shade in the late afternoon. Wasn't checking water temp but fish all seemed fine.

I can't have plants in my pond ,sad to say but koi make a mess of them and also can't have the trapdoor snails the koi suck them right out of there shell .Found all this out the hard way .
