New pond next to a young tree

Like LW said. Roots don't really damage liner. Many people think they do because you're suppose to make sure when you lay a liner there's no roots sticking out. But in that case the cut root is like a stick that could poke thru the liner, not that the root will grow thru the liner.

Once I planted Giant Reed inside a small EPDM liner "pond". Gaint Reed grows fast and huge. It stretched the liner way out (root bound type deal) but didn't damage the liner. That was a pretty good test in my book.

The root on top of the ground would mess with the pond edge more than anything
Short term you wont have a problem

My arizona trees did sent small root masses into the pond over the top of the liner, I just cut them off.
