Might be worth getting rid of the shovel rent a hammer drill or a small jack jammer and a wide dirt chisel. That seems to be the right tool for hard pack clay short of an excavator.

The soil's not the only concern. There's also the cost of more liner, moving the pipes, more rock, bigger pump, etc. Maybe someday I can expand if I feel the need at that point, but for now I'm going to stay with pond size and configuration I'm already working on.
