Hey all,

Been busy getting a raised pond built. It’s not quite finished yet but will be ready next week. I’m thinking about pulling some Koi in with some shubunkin goldfish. I’m not sure how many I can do, but I’m thinking two Koi, and then whatever additional goldfish will work. My pond size is 1.5 m x 3 m and it is 90 cm deep I have Oase 19000 filter and a Oase pump that seems a decent size. What do you think about the number of fish possible? I’m in the UK.

My pond doesn’t have any edges and I’m not sure what plants to go for, I can go for floating plants that just sit on top of the water, but it is 90 cm deep so I doubt I can do much else. What would be your advice here?

Is there any harm to the fish putting lights into the pond? I wasn’t sure if I could run these as it may disturb them.

Any advice for scaring away in particular cats? Also I haven’t seen herons in the area, but I suspect there may be some. I have seen a large eye that floats on top of the pond that is supposed to scare herons, do these work?

Thanks Tim
With that sized pond I'd forget the koi and the cool name.. shubunkins along with some minors will give plenty of e ye candy. And the minnows will make the shubunkins look bigger

The eye your refering to is called the scarecrow and yes the work for a while . Blue heron are smart birds. So they only work for as long as your bird buys it.

Whoops never mind I have never seen a floating eye but I would say no that's not going to work.

Skip the koi, stick with shubunkins, pretty, easy to care for. Won't outgrow the pond.

Nice build

Also, what are the metallic looking things all around the top sticking out over the water?

They are hooks to put a net on. I would like a tidier solution as the current net get in the way of my view . I have 3 small Shubunkins and a couple of Koi that I can exchange when they get too big. No idea if they are good ones but I like them.

Wondering if my fish will need something more entertaining than just a plant or two. Can’t get a clear answer on this. There are a million things for aquariums but not much for ponds!
