Thanks, was inspired by what you were doing for netting around your pond last year.

Not sure how long it will last, just put the net up a few weeks ago, it is a 5” weave from west coast netting. I have it pulled tight to pulleys on 6”x6” posts about 8-10’ tall.

I had to redo the fence around the pond this year anyhow, so I decided it was time to try a net over the pond to keep the herons and ospreys out. Weave is wide enough it really doesn’t bother me too much.

there is stocked trout pond across the street i watch heron fly over head every day . I haven't had any visitors since i put up the cables and netting . I'm thinking I may ditch the net and run a few fishing lines hanging down, not even running to the ground just a little something to close off the larger opening. Though the net really doesn't bother me. it is just that much nicer when I pull it back and the area is unobstructed.

I would love to pull the net. But after the heron tried to empty my 1000 gallon pond through one smallish hole in the net and did almost empty the hot tub pond, the nets stay up.
But those two ponds are only around 2-3 feet deep. The big pond it stays out of the deep area and I have the shallow walk in area well netted.

I went for years w/o a net, then finally broke down this year. I don’t mind the heron nailing fish occasionally, as I don’t get expensive ones and they keep my fish population under control.

What put me over the tipping point is the osprey that showed up and nabbed one of my terrapins, as it was to large for anything other than a bird of prey to nab. I had that terrapin for 12 years and raised it from a hatchling, so needless to say I wasn’t too happy.

@addy1 seeing pics of your net over your pond, made me realize I could live with a wide weave net over the pond, if it means keeping the turtle nabbers at bay. At least I have 6 of the 2 year old terrapins from her, and 19 eggs she laid this year before she disappeared.

So sorry to hear about your loss. I had one I found by the road, still had the egg sack on the bottom. Looked dead. I think a bird nabbed him and for some reason dropped him a long way from water. Kept him until he reached hand size and then let him go. He was a guy turtle so we named him Sam. Funny how attached we get to them.

I don't even notice it anymore. If I need to work the lilies ie walk in the pond, I just pull it to the side. I don't like the look of the tight weave nets and they trap frogs, birds and even dragon flies.

Thanks, yes it is funny how we can get attached to various pets we keep. Still have the offspring of the missing turtle in a different pond, with a net over it to keep predators away. So it makes me feel a little better that her offspring are still around. These guys are going on 2 years old, so I will most likely relocate some of them into the main pond next year. Going to have to plumb a stock tank into the little turtle pond system to accommodate the hatchlings from this years eggs, for the last few months of summer early fall.
