Im just beginning my second year with the same 3 goldfish in 85 gallon stock tank. For the first month I had the original 2 comets they refused to eat any fish food. I ended up with about 5 different kinds. Floating, sinking, flakes, pellets. They turned their fishy little noses up at all of it. They ate the roots of the floating plants and sucked algae of the sides of the tank. What finally brought those guys around was the addition of a new fish. That shubunkin swam out of the bag hunting for food. The others followed suit within a day or 2. The water temperature would have been rising about that time as well. As someone else mentioned they should get hungrier and less skittish as the temp goes up. One of my fish doesn't seem to get food as much as the others. I used to be concerned but I have owned that fish for a year now and have never seen him without a healthy layer of body fat. I used algae tablets when my fish was coming out of hibernation and didn't want to come to the surface yet. They sink to the bottom and dissolve very slowly. Sorry for your loss of the koi.

I'll try feeding the new fish tomorrow and see what they do. they were be used to being fed when in the other pond. The rest of my fish were in fish tanks but still used to being fed. Thanks very much for your words of encouragement.

I would put plants in the pond itself so they out compete the algae. Cut back on the fish food if they’re not eating it, and forget about raising koi. Some fish will never take to commercial food.

Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I last updated you, and a lot has been happening with my pond. There was a major algae bloom that I managed to address. During the process of removing some algae, I pulled up my last Lily pad that had stated coming up from the bottom. The algae had taken over where the Lily was, and unfortunately, the two pads that were originally there when I planted it died, likely due to the stress of transportation. Initially, I thought the Lily was dead and gone, but to my surprise, within about two weeks or less, I now have five or six new pads emerging. And it looks like a bloom is coming up. This is very exciting news.

While I successfully eliminated a significant amount of algae, I've been dealing with ongoing algae growth in my stream, which has been choking my four-leaf clovers. Despite this, the clovers are thriving. Recently, I've noticed the presence of numerous tiny snails within the algae. I've decided to leave the algae be and let the snails flourish. I had wanted to add snails to my pond, but they tend to be quite pricey. The ones that came with a plant seem to be a great addition. I'm uncertain about their specific type, though.

I made an order for watercress and hyacinths - two of each - at a good price on Amazon. However, they arrived in poor condition. I placed them in my bog, which I've finally managed to fix. Some gravel still needs to be put back, resulting in a deep water area. I also tried placing two of the plants in the pond, but I discovered I need a ring to prevent them from getting into the skimmer. Unfortunately, both pond-placed plants have vanished; the watercress likely got eaten, and the hyacinth simply perished. The one in the bog is barely clinging on, and although the watercress looks unhealthy, it's still managing to maintain some green color and its roots are extending.

My fish eventually started eating shortly after I began feeding them. Interestingly, they seem to prefer the cheaper flakes from Tetra rather than the small pebbles I got from the pond digger, which were intended for koi and goldfish. There's one aspect puzzling me - my black shubunkin goldfish. It doesn't socialize with the others, taking its time to approach when I offer food. In contrast, I have four orange goldfish and one nearly white goldfish (almost orange), all the same size as Mr. Black Shubunkin. Additionally, there's a medium-sized marbled black, white, orange goldfish and a larger silver koi. The fish frequently chase each other around none of them seam to be bulling the others but sometimes they both go for the same food one getting to it first. During feeding, they sometimes become excitable, swimming to the surface eagerly, then darting back or swimming away from me toward the rear of the pond. It's a mystery why the black Shubunkin is acting so shy, as it appeared happy and playful when I first selected it at the store. I'd avoid buying a black fish in the future as they are harder to see.

On another note, I'm considering introducing something like a banded shark to help control the algae. I'm searching for a species that thrives in colder waters. I still need to get a lot more plants also but funds are low right now. Thank you for taking the time to read this update, and I eagerly await your insights.

It's looking good. Try to have some patience (that's a serious virtue when it comes to pond keeping!) Algae is going to happen, and until your pond truly matures & finds its balance & rhythm (which can take a couple of years or more) that algae is protecting your fish. Pond plants can struggle a bit early on, so again, take heart & have some patience.

Cute fish. It's probably best that you only have one koi in a pond of your size. As far as why the one is a bit shyer than the others? Fish have individual personalities, and some are just more 'brave' or outgoing than others. Some of my fish will hand feed, others will not. And, speaking of feeding, if you're having algae blooms, cut way back (or STOP) feeding. Your goldfish will take care of that excess algae if they're hungry.

@Landman pond and fish looking good and keep adding more plants, they help w/that algae. Sometimes koi have a love for eating and tearing up plants. Goldfish not as much but they do nip at things now and then if it's tasty to them. Algae comes and goes. I just leave it be and let the fish and snails feast on it. All part of a natural balance. I only feed my fish on Fridays. Seems to keep the excess nutrients down that algae loves and the fish will never starve.

Thanks for the reply and I forgot to mention I only feed them once a day and probably not as much food at that time. I started with every other day or third day but they just seem so hungry. I do see them eating algae, also someone had babies because I saw the tiniest black thing sitting in front of my light and I saw it move. Later when I had finished feeding the fish it came swimming out to catch some tiny food crumbs and I was excited but at the same time I want my pond to mature and get more plants before I have any more fish and just then mr koi came and gulp by by tiny fish. Oh no what did you do i was shocked and then I said oh well I guess I wanted that to happen so the I decided to start feeding once a day. It happened again with the medium goldfish eating a tiny fish and now I haven’t seen anymore.

Fish are great con-artists, they make you think they are starving to death when they are really just piggies

Thanks I figured they wouldn’t starve but they just seem so hungry and I only feed a small amount once a day but I will be cutting back. I will show this to my mom she thinks they don’t get enough food ether but she reads what manufactures want you to do buy more food feed often lol

Mine get fed maybe once a week. Mainly trying to have more fry survive after all the fish snacking the snakes did.

In 2023 we only had maybe one day of snow that was gone the next day the temperatures have been in the high 40’s some days warmer but lots of colder days and cold nights 30’s or less. This weekend we got a real snow storm and last night was about 11 degrees. I was nervous about the pond this winter because of how bad last winter was and I installed an auto pond fill. So far it has not had any issues we have insulation around our faucet as my dad was more nervous than me to have the water on. Enjoy a cold snowy pond picture hopefully it warms back up soon I hate cold weather

I'm impressed with the pond not being frozen over considering the temperatures you were talking about. I don't see bubblers going and it doesn't look like your waterfalls are really gushing. how are you keeping the water that open?

I have one aerator feeding my waterfall box but I added another one just for the winter it’s off to one side of my pond the last few nights finally froze my pond over I think because the netting I installed is holding the snow up also the water usually flows below the ice on my waterfall unless it really freezes and then like last year it was coming on top of the ice and over the outside. I also have 3 return jets that help move my water some.
