The worst aquarium experience of my life was after using an algaecide in it. The rule holds true for aquariums as well: if you have an algae problem, you have another problem and using an algaecide just covers it and the ramifications of killing the algae are often worse than the original problem. Algaecides have only one recommended use IMO: in ornamental fountains with no plants/fish, and then really, BLEACH is better. Throw that algaecide shit in the trash where it belongs.
I have NEVER used alagecide in my aquariums, because, for some strange reason, with dosing co2, a full spectrum light, and everything possible, I have never gotten green water in my tanks, only string/hair algae, wich is quite normal, just unsightly. and now, after spending a serius 100 dollars on a uv light, after a week of usage, my pond stays clear on it own now ughhh, but also yay! now my pond just goes through cycles, about onces a week for a couple of days it turns green, and then bam clear again, so really yup, benifical bacteria is the best it gets :)

Do any of you have recommendations on what type of plants to use? Is there anything I can do aside from plants to handle the excess nutrients?

Thank you!
The only thing I have seen that works really well with algae is beneficial bacteria in your biofilter. It takes time before It matures and can work so it takes a lot of patience. In the spring it takes about a month for my bb to start working well. I totally agree with poconojoe’s comments. When I first started ponding someone I knew who also had a pond asked me how I liked playing g-d. I didn’t know what he meant by that and it took me by surprise. He was totally on target with his remarks though because basically what we are attempting to set up is a natural fully functioning cycle of processes that will allow the fish to live in nature with minimal intervention by us... almost how g-d created the heavens and earth!
