I don't see why not, do a search, there was someone in here that was going to use a sand filter with a different medium.

I just don't recall who.

here is one answer.........

I saw on another pond website there were 5 people that used hair rollers instead of sand.So I took out my sand replaced it with rollers and pads and it has been doing great.Alot cheaper to

I use a sand filter for my pond. Used sand in it last year and it was horrible - worked fine for about a month, and then had the same problem - had to keep back washing it. This year we emptied the sand (I actually had a mixture of sand and bio media), and just put bio media in - no sand. The trick is to get SINKING media as a sand filter (pool pump) works the opposite way than a filter made especially for the pond - so you don't want floating media. It's a little more expensive, but totally worth it. My pond has been crystal clear since the beginning of spring.

However, I woke up this morning to an almost empty pond - OMG - I am on here now trying to figure out what might have happened, but I'll start a new thread with this issue.

I have used bottle caps, cut tubes and plastic fencing. All you need is a place for the colony to populate and there is flow.

Sand is a media that I never heard good things about. It's great for pools cause your not filtering out fish poop, food, or algae muck. Also the sand filters for pools are cleaning up chlorinated water. Like some of the others from the forum suggested you probably should use another type of media. The sand is just too ine and doesn't let water flow thru efficiently. Bio balls or cut tubing would work better, but your only going to see results after you develop a colony of beneficial bacteria.

I have heard with converting a sand filter, you need to make sure your bio media is weighted down, I think if i recall right, so it won't float out when you back wash.
