Keep the net, you won't regret it! You can raise it up higher and let it drape down so you can access the pond better. Nobody really wants a net on their ponds but w/o one you will have a sushi bar for birds. Those birds will stand there forever waiting for just the right hit and they will wipe out every fish in your pond if given the chance. Don't leave any gaps or spaces they can squeeze through or climb over or under cuz they are wiry buggers, oh yes I know!
This guy below squeezed right through the holes in the fishing line and fencing. Now I have it re-enforced w/net over pond and pieces of extra wire wrapped on the fence everywhere along the whole fence.
W/o net:
He comes for a visit and paces back and forth now and then leaves disgusted. He actually tried to climb the net before he left. He is standing right on my path next to my pond just staring into my pond below in this photo:
