I agree about fish.....I've stopped adding bull frog tad poles, as they were all eaten by my fish. Your pond is so beautiful. Do the frogs burrow into the pond's bottom for the winter, or into plants? I remember finding a dead from in my skimmer one Spring....think it went in there thinking it could winter there:(

My tads seem to coexist with the fish, at least I find them all the time in the ponds with fish.
Some frogs go to the bottom of the pond for the winter, they sort of burrow into whatever is there, just sort of cover up. Others go into leaf litter etc around the pond. I have found them in plants, near rocks, and in muck.

Frogs in this video are common frogs (rana temporaria). During the winter they stay underwater or into leaves outside water. In February or March they join together into the pond like you can see in this video.
Fishes are very efficient to eat every eggs or tadpoles. To survive tadpoles need hiding places.

Tadpoles from toads can more easily survive with fishes due to their very bad taste ( they have already poison in their skin).

WOW!!!! Is that the most you have had? Seems like a lot of baby frogs will be jumping around soon.

Do the birds get a few? How is the population controlled?

I get thousands of tads, in every pond, except the big one. They look like a black mat of moving critters. Somehow the population balances out. I do not have thousands of frogs or toads.

I hoping for some in my bathtub this year as there are no fish in there to eat them up.
