They are more plentiful lately because rivers are cleaner than they used to be and the larvae can't live in polluted water. When they are all bunched together it is pretty disgusting unless you like that sort of stuff. I attached another pic of them I took. Even worse when they die en-mass on a boat or car they can be really hard to clean up.

Keith, try a wet used or un used dryer sheet, takes bugs right off you car. Even squished bees, with all the sticky honey. We drove back from virginia, car was covered with bugs, got a dryer sheet wet it, bugs just fall off.

Thanks Addy, Thankfully I didn't have that problem. We weren't close to the Mississippi long enough. It sounds like you drove through the Shenandoah Valley! We did that trip last year. It was really nice.

Wow, great suggestion, Addy, I'm going to try that! When I get home before dark 95% of the time in the summer, I don't get many bugs on my car, but when I'm out at night ... wow, they sure make a mess of the front end, and I always hated trying to remove them.

Thanks Racheltyler. I think they are nice for a small pond like mine. Welcome to the Garden Pond Forum! CE/Addy, I am attaching a pic of the front of my car from this April driving through Central Illinois. It was attacked by a different kind of swarm!

lol don't think dryer sheets will help there Keith.

It works great CE unreal how easy the bugs come off. With a real bad attack I use more than one, but most of the time one used dryer sheet does the whole front of the car.

I was away last weekend and when I came home it looked like I had a new fish in the pond. It is colored like a creamsicle ice cream bar...light orange with some white mixed in. It's not the prettiest goldfish I have seen but maybe it will keep changing colors to something else. The only thing I can think of is one of the babies from last year that was black changed colors really fast. Usually you see a little orange first and they go to mostly orange over time. This happened in less than 48 hours! I'll try to get a picture soon.

Neat Keith, I usually can't keep track of any one fish to follow color changes. Have not seen any I would call ugly, even the green gray gold ones, they have long flowing fins!

Keith, I have never had one go from black to orange and white, but I've had them go from red and white to pale red/orange and white. My original Shubunkin no longer has any black, and her deep red is now a very faded pale red/orange color. She still gets to stay, as she is the mama of quite a few of the babies in my pond. From here on out, though, will have no idea of who is the parent, as far too many are showing signs of being female, or earlier they did. None with large bellies any longer in the goldfish pond. The koi seem to have not yet spawned, or I just have several fat koi!

The fry in the deck pond I am going to be able to see how they change. Small shallow pond with just two small shubunkins, just now saw fry in that pond. Not sure if they came from the big pond, ie eggs sent up via the pump, or eggs from the two shubbies in that tank.

So far I see shubbie colors, but also see the grayish gf colored fry. It appears the shubbie fry have colors pretty quick, one was only 1/2 inch and had shubbie colors, one is 3/4 in and is that gray color. Then I saw some that were like 1/4 inch......I was surprised to say the least to find fry.

It looked like the fish were using the furniture too which was cool. I think it was one of those realty tv shows! We loaded up on a lot of locally produced food while we were there including some freshly picked sweet cherries and some good beer.

Finally one of my water hyacinths bloomed! A second one is starting also. Some of the babies from last year are getting bigger. Still have a lot of black ones though. I took a picture of the black one that changed colors to orange and white while I was away last weekend. It's in the second picture right above the white one and it's in every picture after that. I don't love the coloration but maybe it will improve with time. I went out and bought some water treatment chemicals tonight. I haven't added any water in almost 2 months because we had a lot of rain. Now the water is down about 4 inches or about 100-150 gallons or so which is a lot for my size pond. Naturally as soon as I got the chemicals and set up some buckets we got hit with a really hard thunderstorm about an hour later!
