Ok is it kind of grabbing onto the water lettuce plants? Gosh I saw that but couldn't say for sure if it was a frog. Maybe it's time for new reading glasses? My frogs are out there by the pond right now singing away :claphands:

JW, I thought you said you didn't have any frogs! Great news.
Love your pics, Keith. I have 3 frogs on my pond this afternoon. I keep forgetting what is a bullfrog, what is a green frog. Yours look like they have smooth backs, no ridge. I have the ones with the ridge, I think. I thought I was supposed to look for the round circle behind their eye, that this was an indicator of a bullfrog. But, now that Addy mentioned the ridge thing, I'm going to look harder next time. Been trying to upload the pic I took today, but no go ... maybe tomorrow. It seems to have a slight ridge, but not sure. Ridge = green frog, No ridge = bullfrog ... is that right or backwards? I look on the internet and evidently others have the same problem as me when they post pics. LOL

JW, when I first dug my koi pond, later that summer I decided to expand the small bog. When I pulled all the pea gravel out, there were a bunch of bullfrog tadpoles, or at least large ones, about 2-3" long. I tossed them in with the fish, later thinking it might have been snacks for the fish! Those are the only tadpoles I have ever seen in my pond. And, I would not have seen them had I not dug everything out of the bog. I walk around all the time, you would think I would spot some if they were there, though. Only taddies I've seen were hundred of tiny tadpole tadpoles last year in the goldfish pond. The tadpoles have been singing every night lately, so I suspect there will be lots of eggs laid pretty soon, and more babies. Sadly, I never did see even one baby toad from all those tadpoles. Seemed nothing was eating the taddies, but I just never spotted a tiny toad either. One day they were gone, so maybe a snake or turtle or something stopped by for lunch!

okay, This has to be the most nonevent-full spring ever. No fish died or got sick and I didn't buy any new ones or get any as gifts. All 10 adults and 22 babies doing fine from last year. Water is clear with no issues and the only maintenance I have done are some water changes, netted the bottom, and cleaned the new filter a couple times. I have the same three frogs from last year. I do have an extra tadpole or two but I hardly ever see them. Floaters are starting to multiply but have not taken over the pond yet. Added some new plants I got from Addy the other day and they looking good. Thanks Addy! No plans for expanding the pond this year so far. And best yet no Raccoons this year to trash things because I didn't put in fish popcorn to attract them...trap door snails. Nothing to do but relax and feed the fish and enjoy watching them!

I have not seen any tadpoles of any type yet, but with the goldfish bog overgrown with parsley and clover, no way would I ever find them in there, and the lilies are doing a great job of covering lots of water area on both ponds, too. Only about 1/4-1/3 of the pond, but not seeing anything extra, just the little turtle, who moved himself to the koi pond sometime between this morning and this evening. Cute little bugger!
Sounds like you have your pond all cycled and going well, Keith! What a wonderful feeling that is. :blueflower:

Colleen, It's Wrigley Field. it's one of the smallest major league ballparks. No binoculars but we were pretty high up so it looks far especially with the fog. Oh and by the way that wasn't my sandwich. It belonged to the guy sitting in front of us and I thought it would make an interesting picture.

JW. It was so foggy we couldn't believe the ballplayers could see the ball. It was really weird. It had been a hot day and then all this cool air started coming in off the lake causing the fog. Great news about your tadpoles.

CE, I have heard you can't really see tadpoles in a pond and I believe it. I added a few over a month ago and have only seen a tadpole twice since then and my pond isn't that big. I'm thinking of getting a turtle. Should I?

Here are some pics I took as it was starting to get dark tonight. I'm not sure how great you can see the fish but you can see the motion of them swimming so they are kind of interesting pictures. You can see all the babies. They are definitely growing.

I did a little reading about turtles and decided not to go in that direction. One; they create more waste than fish, and two; they may chase fish or try to take a bite out of them. I saw this video that was posted on GPF from a few years back with a bunch of turtles chasing a poor fish... I think they may be okay in a bigger pond, but not in my little pond. Also most people recommend to put a low fence around the pond to prevent them from wandering away and I definitely don't want to do that. Why is it when everything is going good a pond owner wants to do something that will most likely mess things up?

You have some really nice Comets and Shubies in there, Keith. I'm not going to comment on the turtle. I can only tell you I sure enjoy my little guy. He figured out really fast about coming out when I go out to feed in the mornings. He's back in the goldfish pond again, or at least I'm pretty sure the one in the koi pond last night is the same one in the goldfish pond this morning. He's really neat. I toss some food on top of the lily pads, he hears it, comes looking, and climbs up onto the pads to get the food. But, the 3 koi that are in the goldfish pond also hear it, and I swear they can smell the food on top of the pads! The one koi bumps the pads until the food rolls off into the water, or he climbs onto the pad, sinking the edge, to get the food. Silly fish, cause I feed them first so they should be full. I guess he has a bigger appetite, or it's a challenge to him.
The only reason I would say no on the turtle, is that mine has obviously gone from pond to pond already, and that means he's climbing out of one pond, over the wall and into the other pond. The stream would be a climb to get into, and still a wall to get into the koi pond, since they are really not attached as far as water flow. So, even though he is only about 4" long, he is a good climber. Other than that, I would say go for it, especially if you can find one pretty cheap.
