With the gf and koi fry hiding and growing you might need to worry.

She had 1700 gallons and 4 always removed fry. I don't recall your gallons
Thanks Addy. I originally had 3000-3500 gallons before I built my bog which took up about 20% of the pond because I built it in the pond. I actually don’t have any Koi fry. Maybe it’s all males? The goldfish only have a handful of babies every year so the population grows very slowly. Whenever the goldfish spawn and drop their eggs the Koi are there eating away like it’s a Las Vegas buffet!

You need a snake.....j/k. I had more fry this year. But loss prob around 200 fish to the snakes. I know I added 225 this summer, had maybe 75 ish in the big pond. Have under 100 left. I try to estimate when I feed them.

Hi Tula. Thank you. Sorry I hadn’t checked into GPF in a while and had no idea that you gave your fish away. I hope you are doing okay… oh and my opinion is when your grandchild gets a little older maybe you can share your love of ponds with her! Perhaps just stay away from Koi.… Do I need to be worried? I have 10 Koi and they seem to be growing a lot lately!
I think it depends on how much filtration you're willing to provide. I've read about very overstocked ponds, but they are nearly " over filtered" ( if that's even possible ) and their water quality is good. I think very large koi need both good mechanical and biological filtration, in addition to plenty of O2. If I'd kept them I'd have looked to add a small filter, that delivered clean water directly to a shower filter.

That sound interesting. I‘m prepared to upgrade my bead filter next year. I just bought a higher velocity pump with 2 “ connections and did all the pvc work around the pump. I just need to add a few short pipes to make everything 2” from start to finish. I’ll be putting in a filter that will be compatible with a larger pond rated at 8000-10000 gallons instead of the 4000 I have now.

Can Koi get Covid? My wife and I both game down with Covid this week. We are doing okay but she asked me if I could give Covid to them when I feed them.
Doubt it, but just wash your hands and don't cough on your fish lol.

Hope you feel better quickly.

Haha. I’ll try not to cough on them! Actually I’m not coughing at all. Tomorrow is my 5th day of quarantine. The BA5 variant which I’m guessing what we had is much better than previous variations because our symptoms were considered “ mild”. The first 48 hours were very uncomfortable and it got quickly better by the 3rd day. I think today is going to be the last hot day in Chicago in a while. I’m trying to give my fish as much of the growth food as they will eat so I don’t have to store it over the winter. I give them the same amount of food every time but just increase the frequency of feedings.

Sorry to hear you and your wife got covid :(. I recently got my 5th covid shot, third booster, and was pleased I didn't have side effects like I did with other shots.

I think tomorrow is our last hot day, then big cool down on Th, the first day of Autumn :) We had our pool closed last week end and our whole house generator install is this Friday the 23rd.

We are getting our 5th shot, booster, Monday. We are trying to keep with Moderna, had it scheduled but they ran out. Hubby health too fragile to take a chance with covid.

And we still keep away from crowds.

Happy you are feeling better @CometKeith

I haven’t posted in a while but all is good with my pond. I’m still feeding them because it’s been so warm here. So I can discuss now that I got interviewed by a journalist from the Wall Street Journal regarding a story on urban backyard ponds. They published it but left off my quotes and pictures due to a lack of room. They decided to focus the article on rescue Koi. They did quote someone I’m friends with (Tabb) and showed two pics of his pond! Here is a pic I took in the last few weeks. My impatiens are still flowering!

Your pond looks vibrant and I enjoy seeing your beautiful koi ! Our weather is turning cold this week end, but it's been unseasonably warm and sunny.

I look at my pond and think I'm over loaded then i see other like yours with the same or more and half the size. what are you running for a filter
I use a bead filter rated for 4000 gallons but I’m planning on doubling that next year. I backflush it once a week. Also I have a small bog about 4x7 that is 42 inches deep. My pond is close to 3500 gallons. The picture I usually take only shows about half of it because that is the area the fish go to get fed. I looked up the thread of your pond and noticed you mentioned you had Covid. I hope you are feeling better. We had it too a few months ago but it was very mild.
This is a pic I took over the summer that shows the bog on the left hand side.
