Dbarr in case you were wondering of the 60 or more goldfish I have I think only a half of dozen were ever purchased! I have more than 20 solid orange ones and another 20 or so all black or white ones. I never bought a single fish in those colors! So today we bought a tree for the area just left of the pond. It will go in the middle of the grassy area. This is a picture of it and how it will look in the spring with it’s blossoms. It’s a Yoshino cherry tree. It’s a hybrid. This type was gifted to Washington DC in 1912 by Japan. We didn’t get a chance to visit Nara when we took our trip to Japan last December, but supposedly this tree was first planted there. Nara is known for the docile deer that eat out of your hand and it’s ancient temples. I’m hoping it will be a nice addition to our yard and provide a little shade for the pond in the summer. Since it is ornamental it only has tiny little fruit that robins and swallows eat so

that will be perfect. I’m hoping it’s not too messy as I never really get leaves right now in the pond. It blooms in the spring so that will be nice. We are close to Lake Michigan so I hope that helps the the tree avoid extreme temperatures somewhat.

Thanks Tula. All my Kois are imported from a Japan so maybe that will make them feel at home! In Japan when you ask anyone where you can find Koi ponds they always answer back you mean “carp”? We found some lovely spots that happened to have koi such as a 100 year old garden in a coffee shop in Kyoto but most people we met didn’t seem to know a lot about a Koi. I “liked” the sculpture museum we visited in Hakone that had a Koi pond with small vending machines that gave you a plastic container of Koi food you could purchase with change.

That will be totally awesome! I will definitely let you know the next time I'm in Chicago, I generally go up to Illinois every summer but not sure I'll make it this year with all of THIS stuff going on. Things not going well down here, pretty much ready to throw in the towel, so it will be really nice to see such a nice pond in person.

Keith, I think they are pretty messy. I was in DC after the cherry trees bloomed and there was a lot of cherry leaves and stuff all over the ground, the parks guy we talked to said it's a huge chore every year, but then they have a ton of trees. LOL

Thanks for letting me know! At out old house we had a large silver maple the old owner had bought when he was living there. Even though we tore down the original house we left the maple. What a huge mistake! I would spend two weeks every June cleaning the little helicopter seeds it dropped down. I’m guessing this tree won’t be as bad. I’m always looking for outdoor projects so it will give me something to do if I need to clean a little. Also we are probably not going to living here by the time it gets too big because at some point we want to move someplace warmer! Getting tired of “Chicago” winters!

Okay. Just send me a message but right now we are being super cautious with visitors. The only person who has visited us so far with everything going on has been our two year old grandson and that has been just in the last week. He did have his parents pick him up the other day but we stayed a safe distance! Sorry about the economic opportunities where you are at. We have been unbelievably lucky here because construction has stayed strong through this whole time and our guys get to work as “essential” workers.

Gorgeous pink blooms!
Thanks JW. We used to have a Crab Apple tree at our old house and a Bradford Pear. Sometimes it’s fun to try something different. The view from our back porch is so so and not great. I think as the tree gets larger it will block some of the back of buildings behind us and give a nicer look to the yard. We are hiring the landscape company deliver and plant it. I used to want to do everything myself but for $125 they will deliver and plant It plus we are giving jobs to someone for that work. I’m trying to consciously spend a little more now whenever I can to help businesses and people affected by covid 19. I think if everyone does that it will go a long way.

About your silver maples at your old house........

We planted two trees a few years ago relatively close to the pond , a Red Point Maple and a Northern Red Oak. The Oak hasn't take off.....but the Maple has. Gosh, I hope it wasn't a huge mistake....I'll be afraid to ever remove my mesh net !

Tula hopefully your tree won't be as bad. Silver Maples are considered "nuisance trees" where we live because of all the mess they create. I remember when I was a kid we would see a lot of them and really not so much any more. That and the cottonwood.. what a mess they make!

Sissy. I love how pretty your outdoors is. I have been to parts of Virginia but not where you live. The picture of your area is really gorgeous. Well any extra time I get to spend time with my pond is "well" spent time as far as I'm concerned! It gives me an excuse to get out of the house!
Those pink blooms will be stunning, smart choice.
Hi Garby. Thank you so much. Are you new here? I hope you are enjoying it so far. Welcome to GPF!

you may see a ceasars casino here next as they are investing 4hundred million in dan river mills .I hope it does not take everything down like it did in Atlantic City NJ .Everyone thought it was great until the crime and drug problem got out of hand .Not sure what it will do to me and where I live .I am 35 minutes from there .I guess at first it may be good but you always wait for the other shoe to drop .
