Herz, really cool pictures. Nature can be amazing. Sissy, It's nice now to have cameras on phones because it is so easy to take a picture when you see something interesting.

My jaw dropped when I saw it. If it stays like that that would be a gem to have in any pond!

Larkin, That fish is really great and thank you for sharing. I wish I could buy it, but it looks like we are starting to cool it on discretionary spending for now. Unfortunately we have other expenses ... like college for our daughter next year. I figure I could buy 2500 fish like that for the same cost of one year of college!

Keith, be sure and do as much research as possible on college financial help, Grants, Tops programs, local, regional, and state funding, If possible check with first year students at the school where she plans to attend, get with the counselors there and see if they offer anything. We were in the same boat year before last. So far My step-daughter has gotten 100% of all her college paid for without having to pay anything back. She did have to buy a computer, and some books but even that was partially paid by the grants and additional funding. Lindsey has even put a good bit back in the savings account from some of the funding to have for next year. She's going to nursing school and we figured it was going to be quite costly, so far, Not near as bad as we originally thought. There are many many different programs out there to look into. many grants that don't have to be paid back BUT you have to do some digging to find them, they aren't publicly advertised. Does your state have a state lottery program, if so check and see if they offer any assistance. SOME states offer programs through the lottery if you stay with a in state school. I know in Georgia if you have lived in the state at least one year before starting the college and you stay with a Ga. state college they fund up to 100% of the tuition and books, here they don't cover dorm but with her going to college here at SLU and Delgado she doesn't need a dorm and that is a big expense that we didn't have to pay for. Now she may need to when she gets her final degree due to she may have to take some courses out of state but by that time hopefully she'll have enough saved up to cover most of that. Good luck!

Larkin, Thanks for the suggestions. You are always a good source of information on ponds or otherwise. We are aware of merit scholarships that she may qualify for and Fasfa, but we have not done the research yet about possible scholarships and grants. She is a woman going into engineering so hopefully we can find some additional help for her education. Maybe I can afford that fish after all!

I haven't posted anything in a while so this is what is new. I have finally removed all the plants from the pond in the last week and removed the biofilter. The fish are pretty happy with lots of room in the pond to swim around. Maybe less plants next year? The outside air temperatures have been much more milder this year than last and have just recently dipped into the 40's. So here is the question. The pond water has a distinctive brown color from some of the leaves I have not removed quickly enough. She I be concerned? I know I can do a bunch of water changes to get it more clear, but if anything it seems to make the fish feel safer because they are not as visible to predators. It's been fun seeing them swim around closer to the top then always deeper down when there is no cover to protect them. Pictures coming soon...

Sounds like tannins from the leaves, you could use charcoal to clear the water, or just water changes or just wait till spring. I don't think it will hurt the fish

The only harm I see in tannins is that the filter the light from the sun at warmer your pond up .There is a big articles on that stuff at some of the pond store places online .I guess it could be true as it would be like tinting your water with the blue dye does .Not sure

Addy, I didn't think it is hurting the fish either. They all seem very healthy and active despite the cooler temps. Maybe they are heart healthy like tannins in wine? lol. I was thinking the same thing about the tannins being like the dye. I think the fish realize they are harder to see when the water has some color to it. Maybe there is something to be said for dying the water to make your fish less jittery. Sissy, My pond doesn't get direct sun from last month until next spring. It is next to my garage and it blocks the sun in the winter months. In the summer the sun is high enough and gives it about 4-5 hours a day of sunlight.
