I was just going to say "that's really hard to see" - you beat me to it! It's too bad the bird found your pond, but at least there's a solution that you can live with!

How many gallons is your pond? I'm going to suggest you may want to stick with smaller fish anyway, if the pictures are giving me an accurate size estimate. We have about 4000 gallons in our total system and had a dozen big koi plus a herd of goldfish. We lost all but one koi to a plumbing failure last winter and decided that we're sticking with goldfish. They all came through with flying colors. Losing all those fish was just too hard for me to take. Koi are definitely more challenging to keep - our Goldies and shubunkins are less stressful for this fish mom! We have one big koi left and he's the king of the pond now.

I figure it is 1100-1200 gallons...............its over 3 1/2 feet deep for about 40% of the pond. I only have one koi, he's the only koi that's ever been in there, because i was afraid they would get too big. I had 10 assorted goldfish also, but lost 2 shubunkins and 2 fantails and 2 comets to the Heron. It looks like 4 goldfish and the koi are still there. I had a gray goldfish that was really hard to see with a pretty long tail, I'm hoping he will show up too.............it is already getting chilly at night, so i figure i will wait untill spring to add a few more. I would like to get 4 shubunkins to add to the pond. That would make 8 goldfish and a koi, plus 7 rosie reds and several dozen mosquito fish. Would that be too many?

Just remember they have babies, lots of babies. With one koi you will get koi goldfish mix babies. I quit feeding when they are spawning, helps with population control.

Sooooooooo, Mr. Stupid Heron stopped by the day before Christmas. I had the day off and happened to be looking out the kitchen window. He landed, walked right up to and through all 7 of my huge peahens hanging by the pond, and proceeded to check out my net I have stretched across the pond. He stared at it for about 5 minutes and then flew away. No more sushi for you......Yay net!
