the tee breaks the syphon if the pump shuts down so the filter doesnt back drain into the pond...it wont stop the upper pool from draining. dr case does the same. i use one and it performs flawlessly. i started with a 90* elbo and switched over. check out building a 55 gallon bio filter to see the way its installed seeing i didnt haveit yet in my postings

I use a check valve to prevent siphoning back to the pond. If he is getting water out the top, then there is too much pressure in the filter system to overcome this. A check valve will help him if this is true.

this is the way it should look... the center pic is with an arificial plant dropped in the tee to help hide plumbing...i went out and took these so you can see, this is with the filter and pump going! on easter i had the system running for looks while i had a house full of guests, when i turned it off an hour later the filter had drained bact to the pond...this cures that, if i turn the power off i loose 1/8" of water maybe as the weir finishs flowing.

you may want to raise the pipe above water level... and you may be using apump insufficient to do this.. what size pump are you using? and did you build the filter inside the pool or use the whole upper pool?

Koiguy,

My pump is only 295 gph, but it seems strong enough to push the water 6" above the tee. I am using the whole upper pond as the filter.

I one of the earlier thread you mention

"it wont stop the upper pool from draining

what do you mean by it?

thanks,
xman

o.k i thought you said you were gonna build a filter that will sit inside the upper pool, and not use the whole thing because of its weird shape. raise the pipe slightly above the water line.

Just currious, why the section above the water level? Does water flow out while pump is running or is it just to break the siphon back to the lower pond?
