Mistake #1 - use malachite green right away. Day 3 and didn't see any fungus this morning. Got home, I see it spreading wildly. Used turkey baster to blast as much away as possible. I hope I didn't kill that many eggs. I'm using malachite green now. I knew it and didn't listen to my gut. Lots of eyes and bodies getting shiny with flash light. should hatch tomorrow.

No your first mistake was not using Methylene Blue. All the other breeders I know use it. It made a huge difference in preventing fungus on my 2009 and 2010 spawns. You dose it with 1/2 the recommended amount for eggs.

I know that name! haha... But long forgotten. Last time I touched it was probably 10+ years ago. Then there was this med I bought 2 years ago called Proform-C. It looked just like this methylene blue but was wondering why it's not so blue in the water and I just shrugged my shoulders and said whatever... Then I read everywhere about melachite green and looked at my Proform-C and bingo!

Great... I made 2 mistakes already... Getting ready for more. I'm a total noob all over again.

I used normal dosage of 1ml per 10gallons with Proform-C... I hope I didn't OD. That would be mistake #3.

Perhaps pool table will come sooner rather than later.

They started to hatch Thursday night. By Friday night, there were thousands and thousands. I can't even estimate how many. Just too many. Maybe the fungus outbreak was a good thing. I fished some out from 130G and tossed into 60G in case i wipe out the whole tank by accident. I think about 200 fry. So far, zero casualties after hatching (well, except maybe 1/2 thousand that got trapped underneath submersible pump - pump is now raised off tank floor) from my mistakes and perhaps dosing Proform-C at probably 80% of recommended rate. I did 10% water change soon after but that was because I wanted to syphon out the dead eggs.

I looked at some under the microscope. Very interesting and killed one by accident. Oh well...

I use nylon socks over the intake of aquarium filters to prevent them from being sucked in. You have to clean or change it daily.

May I make a simple solution suggestion. Get the submersible pump out! You can get sponge type air filters and air pump if you don't already have them very cheap, use a bare bottom tank, no gravel at all! this will allow you to suck food and waste right off the bottom, the sponges will protect the fry from getting caught or sucked in and you can keep an eye on all the fry while they get a little size. I have used this method rasing cichlid fry, goldfish fry, and barb fry with great sucsess. I raised over 1000 cichlid fry in a 30 gallon tank with this and got them to about 1/4" long and then started seperating them into seperate tanks. All said and done I ended up with about 750 I had to find homes for and I kept about 100 to raise myself after about three months, I ended up having to find homes for about 75 of those.

Thanks for the tips.

Using nylon sock for submersible and doing fine so far.

Thanks for the advice.. I thought about using sponge filter but I canned it. I don't have one and I'm not willing to disconnect my 30G garbage can filter. So far so good. Lots of fry clinging around pump area on the sock but it's all good.

Attached some pics.

I was on the fence whether to siphon out the rotten eggs at the bottom of the tank one particular evening. Had I done it, I would likely suck up 1000+ fry in the process. When I woke up next day, I'm pretty sure 1/2 of the fry. That was yesterday.

But I'm still left with thousands. haha... I guess good way to cull. All of them are pretty much eating baby brine shrimp. No more deaths that I can see so far. Ammonia is stuck at around .25ppm and using ammo lock if that even helps. It's always like that no matter what I do for now. I did 35-40% water change yesterday. I tried to seed the bio load by taking scrubbies from main pond but no change after 24hrs.

All things considered, I think so far so good.

I went back and played catchup on what you were doing James. Was very interesting to see you go from all those beautiful fish in that cool basement pond you set up to selling them off and now look you are back into it all w/ the babies. I hope they live and turn into beauties like the others you've had before. This is fun to keep track of and look forward to seeing them when they are more than just pinhead size

Yeah, j.w.!

I would never have thought. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Haha.. I will have the resources now, so I will try... I'll keep the fry progress updated on the other thread... Here I go again.. if this works, I'll have to wait at least another year for pool table.
