I bought a 25lb bag of 100% bentonite kitty litter from wal-mart for $2.59 and I use it to get rid of the string algae in my pond. I place about a quart of it in a mesh bag so it can't float out. It does leave a foggy color in the water but it clears up fast. I hang it under my waterfall so it spreads out good. I replace it every once in awhile and it seems to work fine w/ no harm to fishes. I just make sure it is the kitty litter w/ no perfume or additives and is 100% pure bentonite. It sure seems to keep the water clear. :coolgleema:
