Good point addy1! Good quality is important, and it's also a good idea to angle it slightly so that water can run off. We have a slate roof here in the UK and it is going strong!

This is the slate I used to trim the wall of the deck pond, still doing good, but not in water. I sealed it well to protect it from the snow and rain.
It was not high quality and will split peel apart.
