Yes, that is sad, but understandable.

We have had some wild iguanas die mysterious in my district and everyone is concerned with what killed them and if its a problem for humans - as in can they spread it. Additionally my friends kid was hospitalized with salmonella which they have traced back to a reptile, most likely the kid ate something off a table that an iguana had been laying on.

I do my own live trapping, mainly for gophers. Raccoons don't bother our pond at all.

I live-trapped over 15 chipmunks a few years ago and drove them various places to set them free, and we *still* have about 400 left. My husband saw a chipmunk running back over the bridge near our house, and we swear it was one that we'd sent away. You can't get rid of them no matter how hard you try.

While sad, it is concerning it was near your children. We had a raccoon show up at our pre-school one morning and it was clearly "not right"......broad day light, coming towards families etc. We called the police and they said they were going to shoot it. It was minutes before the children's Valentine party and I quickly ushered them to another area. I was upset, but keeping the children safe was the priority.
