I'm surprised you've never had water loss before @Suzie 50 - it's a pretty common winter time issue, especially when it's really cold and dry. It's not the worst problem you can have in the cold weather, that's for sure!

I have been adding water once a week thanks to the cold snap we had since Christmas. The water seems to evaporate faster in the winter than it ever does in the summer! We brought the hose cart into the basement at the end of fall. I just hook the hose up to the utility sink faucet, run the other end out the side door to the pond, and let the water run into the path of the waterfall for about 15 minutes. It's much easier than hauling buckets up and down the stairs, especially if it's cold outside.
