Hello MitchM,Because you will never be able to create a seal between the pond liner and the substrate so that sufficient air pressure will be created to have the air forced out through the liner and into the water column.
Give it a try and you'll see what I mean.

I can see what you mean but with only 8" of water in the pond I can see the liner floor being lifted with the air pressure beneath so I'm sure that it would produce a visible column of bubbles if the liner was torn anywhere and I can't. Even though there must be enough pressure to inflate a car tyre. The necessary pressure may not be getting to where the leak is. So I am rushing to the conclusion that I should just change the 18 year old liner and have done with it.
