Koi vs goldfish.

The true sign that they are koi is the barbels (Wiskers). Not sure what store you bought your koi from but if it was something like Walmart, they may not have been koi. The people who work in these stores usually know nothing about the fish.

I bought them from a pond supply store well known for their koi

That makes me so bummed. I know we have lots of frogs. I wonder if my koi got eaten and I never noticed

Well, after you pull them all and can get a better look and improved pics, you'll have a better idea of what you're dealing with. What does your pond look like?

Yep look for whiskers on the sides of the mouth. If no whiskers then no koi for you! What color were the supposed koi when you bought them and how long ago?
