thanks!

I'll just work on fattening up the gold guy then.

I pulled my smallest oranda inside today. She's been doing really well out in the pond, but as she's only about 1 1/4" long (without tail), I figure better to winter her inside this year and put her back out next spring...

ah, yes, orandas have to go in for winter. They are way too delicate for a winter pond. Funny to see the tail like that...totally looks the same as a watonai tail. So interesting!

As far as fattening foods, you need to do a combination of healthy things, not just all protein. I've never tried yams on my fish...I've tried carrots and they don't like 'em for some reason. But most koi will try anything. I have a neighbor who even feeds them bits of chicken and such. Go figure! But you've got to fatten him up just a bit more. You don't need to go wild, but just try to balance his body with his head size in the next 30 days. I'd say, that's probably all the time you've got before he starts going into a hunkering down stage. It's always hard to add fish to a herd this time of year--particularly tosai (yearlings) such as yours.

I've got a fall harvest coming in late September at a local mud pond breeder here where I live, and I'm going to go and see what he has. I know it's not the best time to add to my fish family, but I want to see what happens. His prices are fantastic during the fall harvest, so I'll try one or two to see. But normally I try to avoid adding new fish this time of year.

Even if you could get a better girth on that fishy in the next 30 days, you'll be helping him out for the winter rest.

Is this a test? Not sure why you're asking, as I'm sure the vendor on Ebay must have identified his/her fish properly for you to buy it...

I hate to be the one to say this but; This looks like a fish that could use a few meals. It is skinny, I would look for more body in a healthy koi.

If this is normal than I am surprised.

No, I didn't buy it, just never seen anything like it before. I believe the ebay seller identified it as "unique"? The significant other and I were trying to decide if it was cool or just butt ugly...lol...
I was just wondering if anyone had seen anything like it before...

i agree with doc dave. Longfins tend to have a more slender body than standard fins, but this fish looks underweight based on the balance of the head size and the body size. Head is too big for that skinny body.

I can only guess it's of some kind of german descent (sort of like a doitsu), based on odd coloration down the back. But it's hard to tell from the photo because the fish is at a weird angle and the flash is so heavy. It does have lovely and long fins, but the head is pretty freaky looking.

I think "unique" is this vendors nice way of saying it's a mutt. But, of course, mutts are just as loveable to those of us who are their parents. As the saying goes...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

Yeah he kinda reminded me of skeletor (showing my age here) from cartons of years past. The question is, how do you determine a value for mutts? For instance, A bright pink koi would most definitely be a mutt, yet, I am sure he would have value as well. What is the most anybody here has ever paid for a mutt? Just curious..........

Oh, great question! That's the beauty of mutts! In my view, the answer is: Priceless!

It's like art...what someone thinks is butt ugly...another person will pay millions of dollars for. My hubby hates Jackson Pollock and doesn't understand why someone would pay millions for what looks like splatter that a 5 year old has done on canvas..but yet another collector will pay millions. Go figure.

As I said...it's all what YOU love. And if you love it, you'll pay. Who cares about the standards? Unless you are showing koi and need to fit the standards, you will buy and love the face that only a mother can love. LOL!
