Another one finished. You may notice something different about this one compared to others. (Not the yarn - which I'm still experimenting with, I may wrap it differently before all is said and done.)
I brought a blank piece of wood over to my grandma last week. She is, of course, up there in age. Her health is not what it once was, and her vision is getting worse all the time. I asked her if she'd write "Merry Christmas" for me and if she wanted to do more than that she could. She decided to do holly. So I gave her a pencil and she created it. Later on, my mom looked at it and said "you're going to touch it up, right?" Nope. I want it exactly as she drew it.
So, from there I brought it home and used my wood burner to engrave the entire thing. Every letter, every imperfection, and every oddity. I then painted the holly so it at least somewhat looked like that's what it's supposed to be. I also asked my grandma what color I should paint the background, and she said to leave it bare wood, so that's exactly what I'm doing.
For many years, it was tradition that she would buy me a christmas ornament every year. It was obviously a tradition that started when I was young, but even as I grew up, she'd still get me one many years. Eventually as she got out less and less the tradition came to an end. In a way, this revisits that tradition one more time. And it's no doubt my favorite of them all. Made by her, with a little help from me.
