How do you decide when is the right time? I meant to do mine a while ago but have been stuck working 7 days a week lately and by the time I get home, it is dark. Need to do it very soon!

I'm no expert but I already cut back most of the plants already and just want to make sure I drain my filter and lines before they can freeze andd remove my uv bulb and sleeve. My pond was not winterized or covered in the fall last yr so I inherited a nightmare.

I actually live very close to Edison about 15 min away in Old Bridge.
The weather has been very mild but suppose to drop into the 20's this weekend.
I do have a aerator and de icer not heater. The aerator is in but off right now since falls are still going. haven't thrown the deicer in yet. should I put them both in at same time as a back up to the other also where should they be placed in the pond? deep shallow or doesnt matter?

Same here. I had a blast with my new pond. Planning on getting a few new plants next year for my stream and pond. Maybe some plants around the edge of the pond too. I can't wait to get things going again. Kind of sad that the pond is down for nearly half a year.

I wish it would get cold and stay cold, I pulled my pump my crystal clear water went to murky when we had some hot sunny days. It does not look murky looking into the pond, but via the camera the water has a cloudy look it never has. 60 this week 30 next week.

I need to put out some seeds, but unless it decides to get cold and stay cold, they need to wait until spring. OW the plants will germinate on a warm day then die when it freezes. Even spring is a gamble, we lost a lot of new growth this spring when it dove down to 27 in late may. The company I bought the seeds from said this area is difficult since we have no clue if and when it will really stay winter.

When I was a kid here, we had winter that came and stayed, ice storms, snow, not any more.

If you need some bog type plants, jb, let me know I have tons, could send you a box full in the spring. I yanked a ton just a few days ago, won't even notice in the spring, they grow so well and fast.

Already planning for next years changes to my pond too. Gotta get outside today though and clean up remaining leaves, change net, pull filter, add aeration, drop in de-icer and test water. We have cold temperatures and snow on the way this weekend.

I would definitely like to take you up on the plants in the spring! :)

So I froze my you know what off but I decided to shut it down today. A bit of ice forming on falls and pond so I drained filter and pump and threw in the de-icer and air bubbler. :(

Sweet dreams to your pond SV. I don't think it gets as cold here as what you have there and I'm just leaving my falls and filter running all through the winter. I must say tho it has been unseasonably cold this November here. You will be fine w/ your de-icer and air going :cheerful:

Weather channel says it is running colder than normal in most of the states .I know the wind is really cold here and if there was no wind it would not be too bad here ,It is nice and sunny .

I good inch or more of ice on my pond. Up to an inch of snow tomorrow. Winter has sadly begun... a little too early, for me.
