I would cover it with plastic, i just covered mine last week,i have done this for two years now and it does not freeze,and i do keep a pump running. You have to build a frame over your pond to keep the plastic off the water.
Take a look at the cover in this thread. Milwaukee is similar to Toronto in winter, so it's closer to your climate than most of the areas represented here.
Hi Beeliz, I would suggest you throw in a de-icer and only plug it in if it freezes over completely and then use it until you melt a hole. Thats what I do and it doesn't get as cold here as you do.
