Just cleaned the koi pond and going rehab it. will Iris live in the pond? 15 inches deep, EPDM over concrete, skimmers, water falls, aerators. How to plant them, in pots? any other suggestions?

Thanks

Hello and welcome.

How big is your pond? Do you have any pictures of your set-up? Are you still going to have koi in it, or just plants?

Iris should do well! Mine were planted in a gravel “bog.” Not sure how others plant theirs.

The pond is a repurposed 1950s swimming pool. One end is a patio, fireplace and the other is the pond, 18" deep. 5 koi, and a buncha Gambusi-mosquito fish. The whole thing has a 3' wall.

Going to look for iris today!

A weighted basket is the easiest way to go. You can also have them 'free rooted' in the pond but need to have some way to prop them up because initially, they will fall over unless you tie them off.

Hiya, from Tampa-area, and welcome. I have iris in my bog planted directly in the gravel, and it's growing well, though it hasn't bloomed since I put it in (late spring).

Just don't stick those Iris tubers in between any rocks close to your pond edge as when they grow to enormous sizes they will push the rocks right into the pond. Oh yes I know. I had to go diving for rocks and take the tubers out too. Very hard to get out from the earth. They are definitely best used in pots
