The hole is for gas exchange and is a must with the air. Your pond has to release the gasses produced from decay and other chemical reactions. In my experience people often can keep a hole in the ice simply by using a bigger air pump. I usually use gastair but they are a higher cost then most.

I'm more worried about the snow covering it. It's definitely not freezing because it is 4.5 ft deep. To much snow to go out there. Hopefully the airstones are making it livable.

Great to hear from Calgary. There are so many questions here about ponds in cold climates that we need someone who deals with real cold. How deep do ponds have to be to keep from freezing solid in Calgary?
