Due to a tear in my butyl liner I have emptied and refilled my 500 gall pond about a week ago. After filling with tap water I added Tetra Pond Aqua Safe before restocking with my fish. Since then I have been adding Takazumi Eco Algaex as prescribed to keep any fibrous algae at bay. I notice now that I can no longer see the fish clearly as the water is getting a murky brown colour. Can anyone recommend what I can add to make the water clear again please?

I do not add anything to my water and it is crystal clear 5 feet down. Can you give us any more info about your pond such as size, filtration, number of fish, plants, etc? Was it clear before you changed the water?

If ya can't find the source, then it will be reoccurring. It could be run off or rain or many other variables. Might be a result of the algae dieing and decomposing after using the Algaex product. After the very big water change, the massive amount of chlorinated water might have killed quite a bit bio-film creating the residue; dechlorinators work good, but they are not instant. It is better to add slower, smaller water changes over a period of time rather than one big water change.

To resolve the murkiness, you can try a pond safe flocculant or polymer product if looking for a liquid product, but I have never used any of them.

Also, can get some quit batting in a container and allow the water to get filtered by it for a few days.

There are also some natural polymer products out there. One particular produce is Koi Clay Clacium Bentonite. Here are a couple threads talking about it: 1) pond calcium montmorilloniite clay; 2) ultimate koi clay. I think this works due to a particular polymer released as the clay product dissolves and absorbs into the water.

The big question is did you kill off a lot or most of the biobugs when you worked on the pond.

If you did you should not be adding chemicals to kill the algae and what are your ammonia and nitrite levels.

I use Pondsafe Algea Cure because it has a natural flocculant in its makup .
All Flocculant means is its something to attract the dead algae cells to and bind with it, then the whole thing is filtered out at your filter leaving you a cystal clear pond right down to the bottom .
There are many other products out there with flocculents in them just read the back of the bottle it'll tell you if there is or isnt.

Thanks to all. When I emptied the pond I swept nearly all the dry residue up and it was left fairly clean. I filled up with tap water and added the Tetra pond Aqua Safe to remove chlorine etc. I believe I put more Aqua Safe in than I should have as I got the cap measures mixed up. The pond at that stage was perfectly clear. I put in my fish (4 x 6" Rudd, 5 x Roach up to 9" in length and approx. 40 small 3" Rudd or Roach minnows which had hatched out a while ago. The 500 gall pond is aerated by a frog spout, a waterfall and air tube. It feeds a filter tank and then a smaller container with a 16 watt UV bulb. At the time of refilling I added back in 5 x bundles of oxygenating plants and it also has 3 x marginal plants in containers. There was no sign of ant algae when I refilled and I used the Algaex as a preventative measure to stop the algae starting. The Algaex is a brown powder which is sprinkled on the surface. I don't have any algae yet but the water is very murky and I can only see down a few inches.
If I can find an additive that clears the water and is safe for the fish I will use it but what is recommended?

Sounds like you killed the bio filter. Not good. Forget about clear water and pay attention to the ammonia and nitrites for the next 2 or 3 months.

Just checked the pond water and details are...

Ammonia..0.0
Nitrite..0.0
PH ..9.0
Phosphate ..0.25

Should I worry about the last two readings please?

all you have to do to get rid of it is to buy quilt batting and fold some neat and put in a basket with the water from the pond going through it and back into the pond .

Ask someone that does quilting, or go to a store that sales sewing supplies. Quilt batting is sold to put in between the fabric to make that nice fluffy quilt. Some pillows are stuffed with something similar.

Thanks for reply. I live in the UK and we call it wadding. Do you just lay it down in sheets cut to size in you filter box please? Like your dog pics by the way as I am a dog lover.

The little girl to the left passed away in april, the little girl to the right, my honey got for me. He could tell I need a pup, even with grieving the loss of my little one. She is a real treat, a parti colored yorkie. Keeps me very busy, just 5 months old now.

Good catch hth, I forgot it can be made of cotton also, that would not work well.
