How much surface area should be shaded from direct sunlight?

Ponds with 60% of the surface area well planted with waterlily, iris etc usually find clear water, water quality dictated by the ratio of plants. Though, you might upset that if l you piled an unsuitable number of fish and fish food in

I cover, with the lilies, about 40-50% of the surface, the fish love the hiding spots and it does help keep the water cooler and less algae.

I haven't put any fish in there at all, they are all here from the previous owner. The pond doesn't "look" overstocked at all from my POV...

I do feed them a small handful of pellets most days though...
