I happen to really like the suggestions here of the dual pump action, even a trickle flow will keep things from drying out, but they won't result in much action.

Hook them both up with Check Valves into the pond. You could probably reduce the flow 80% at night, possibly 90%, and still keep things "wet." Just have them both running (and overlapping) for some short window.

Run Main Pump from Sunrise to Nightfall.
Run Secondary Pump from Sunset through Sunrise + 30 minutes.

That should do a thing.

Some people have had problems with check valves clogging up, so keep an eye on that.
There are different types, so do your homework. Perhaps there are some types that can handle any solids that your pumps may pick up.

24/7/365. We spent a good chunk of change on a fairly expensive submersible pump. We have not noticed an increase in our power bill. I'm sure there is some, but it hasn't been enough to make us say "wow that pump is using lots of power!" I wonder if some research into a really energy efficient pump would make everyone feel better?

Thanks everyone for the ideas and comments.
I think for the moment we've moved on. Pump is running 24/7 and I haven't much thought about it.
I may revisit it but think we need to give everything time to settle in.

I have gone the route of 2 pumps. I run a large pump 12 hours a day for waterfall and filter with bioballs. Have smaller pump continuous to bog and so far it works for us.
