How much oyster shells for 2500 gal pond. I bought 10lbs yesterday and will check the ph but just wondered if there was such a thing as putting in too much that could harm the water?
And how often do you have to replace the stuff and what do you put it in?

Should I put it in a sock thingy or can I just put it in a container and set it on a shelf in the pond and does it need to be by moving water to work?

I clean it when it looks yukky this time of the year every 2 or 3 days .sometimes I take it out and wring it out and put it back other times I just hose it off .Remember you put it in not to just throw it in .I cut it in 36 inches lengths and fold it neat this way when I take it out I try to keep it neat easier to handle that way

Oyster shells continue breaking down until there is nothing left, This may take years, You can replace them or just add some back, they need to be placed similar to a barley bale, in moving water so that the calcium being broken down gets mixed into the water column. cleaning them periodically will not hurt anything and will get the muck out and allow for the shells to dissovle better. You can use as much as you want, once a body of water gets so high it will slow the breakdown on it's own. This is the same thing that happens in a saltwater reef tank when using Dolomite. It keeps the PH up and stable.

yeah, and i lightly grind or roll the stockings in my hand occasionally too.not enough to rip thru the nylon but enough to keep the bits loose and semi clean.
