Bigger is better for most people. The more water you have the less likely one small incidence of something falling in will change the chemistry, larger gives the fish more room to escape natural predators, larger makes it get through the winter better especially if it is deeper, larger gives your fish more room to grow, larger helps keep the bio-load low, larger is actually less work for most people once it's set up, Smaller (under 1000 gallons) is okay if you stick to goldfish and don't have too many
