My fishless ponds had ice like that last winter. Did not try to walk on them the deer walked on my big pond in 2009, it was frozen solid. (no fish load except 4 unknown fish in there)

The only time it gets that thick here is when we have a deep freeze like last week (daily temps were barely getting over 0F for over a week), and the ice forms in such a way that water from the falls ends of flowing out over the top of the ice sheet. This builds up the thickness very radidly until a good portion of the water (ice) is actually out of the pond.

The last couple of day the water temps have really come back up again. The ice that I had chopped loose finished melting overnight, although there is still a shelf thick enough for me to walk out and look straight down into the deepest part of the water. I have not seen any sign that I lost any fish through the freeze, and if the water temp keeps rising the fish might actually start begging for food again soon... although the extended forecast did suggest we might be seeing more snow by next Friday.

We are snowing today, they are saying possible 50 next weekend.
Ponds are frozen, fishless ones, fish ones have open water.

2009 the deer were walking on the pond it froze so hard.
