Yep, that's a bullfrog, and I have lots of bullfrogs in and around both of my ponds. I saw two dead birds in my ponds last year, first time for that, and suspect the bullfrogs caught them. I think I've heard they don't usually eat the bird, they are too large, but rather drown them and then spit them out. Again, I have to say, I have not noticed any fish go missing. BUT, I've not seen any babies or eggs for 2 years either. :) Could be the adult fish eating them, but also could be the frogs ... or likely both.

Survival of nature, I say. If they are smart enough to catch a bird, so be it. Same with the praying mantis trying to catch a hummingbird. Oh, gosh, I'm pretty sure I would save the hummer if I saw that happen. And, truth be told, I would probably net the bullfrog and tell him to cough up the bird, too, if I thought I could save it. LOL But, in nature, that's part of life. They don't just do it for our entertainment, they do it to survive.

We have a resident bullfrog - Mr. Bigg - who makes a habit of catching birds. Two or three a day sometimes. I'm OK with it, except he doesn't always eat them. Sometimes he just drowns them and spits them out. Not cool big guy.

But if you ever get a chance to watch a bullfrog stalk a bird it's quite interesting. It's like watching a lion stalk it's prey. The things you learn when you have a pond!
